Some products can be used in puppies as young as 4 weeks. For pups younger than 4 weeks, groom with a flea comb, or pick fleas off with a tweezers. Be sure to keep the pups warm while
you’re working with them; wash the bedding; vacuum the surroundings; and treat the mother.
Fleas can remove enough blood to make puppies anemic, so confirm your pup's gums are pink.
Watch for rice-like dried tapeworm segments at the rectum or in the stool in the next several weeks because fleas carry tapeworms. There are two categories of medication for puppy care:
- products that kill adult fleas now
- products that affect flea offspring-the eggs and larvae
Some products fit in both categories.

Products that affect flea eggs and larvae are called Insect Growth Regulators (IGR ’s). IGRs are effective when you can clean up the environment and the puppy will have little exposure to fleas in the future. This includes no exposure from the environment or other animals, including indoor cats.

One pet owner flew with his dog from his home in Manhattan where he had no fleas to California. He picked up the dog from the airport baggage area, and took it home. The dog began to scratch, and by nightfall was scratching so wildly that he rushed it to the 24-hour emergency hospital. "It has fleas," the vet told them. "Fleas?" he said. "What are fleas?" And so began his education. He was well schooled by the time he made his next move, and although this move was to Florida, which some call the flea capital, he has never had another problem. Advantage, Frontline, Revolution, Program, and Sentinel have been among his favored products.
